Especially after the 2000s, studies on the use of plasma processes in the defense industry increased. There are numerous studies with plasma actuators to increase the maneuverability and aerodynamic effectiveness of aircraft and these studies show that plasma actuator systems have a significant impact on flow separation control.
Studies on different airfoils have shown that the pressure distribution around the airfoil can be reduced with the use of plasma actuators.Thus, the flow separation around the wing can be compressed and the turbulence effect can be reduced. In addition, plasma discharge increases the lifting force coefficient of the aircraft and reduces the drag force coefficient. In this way, both the aerodynamic efficiency of the aircraft is increased and fuel consumption is reduced.
